Low Level Laser

Low level lasers are different from the more publicized heat lasers, which are used in many surgical procedures to cut and cauterize tissue. There has yet to be even one recorded side effect in the 25 years low level lasers have been used. Studies have been done proving the low level laser’s effectiveness in many cases. The Erchonia laser, which is used in our office, has actually made history as being the first low level laser in the world to gain FDA market clearance for the treatment of pain.

The Effects of Laser Light on Tissue and Accelerated Tissue Repair

The most common example of the conversion of light energy into chemical energy is photosynthesis, where plants manufacture food from carbon dioxide and water. Light energy from the sun is the essential item in that process. We are all familiar with photosynthesis, the well-known process that converts photons of light energy into chemical energy.

As mentioned previously the first FDA market clearance was for chronic neck and shoulder pain. The laser in this study was a 5 mW 635nm line generated beam (Erchonia). The treatment time was a total of one, 4 minute treatment. The results showed a difference in pain by 64% decrease in all patients treated in comparison to the placebo group, along with increased muscle strength and range of motion. The second market clearance for carpal tunnel was using a 100mw 830nm laser (Microlight). In this study they treated the patient three times a week for five weeks with each treatment for 15 minutes and at the end of the study there was a difference in pain of 6.6% between real and placebo patients. This information was taken from company submissions to the FDA. These studies also prove that less laser energy produces more efficient results. These were biostimulation lasers not high powered lasers. There is no tangible information available with high powered lasers for a therapeutic indication.

The action of laser light on tissue is quite similar to photosynthesis in plants. Photons of light from a laser penetrate deep into tissue and power the synthesis of adenosine triphosphate (ATP). ATP is a molecule that is a major carrier of energy from one reaction site to another, in all living cells. Increases in ATP, as a result of laser light, augment the energy available to cells so that a cell can absorb nutrients faster and expel waste products. In straightforward terms, the cells of tendons, ligaments and muscles are repaired faster when exposed to laser light. How much faster? A good rule of thumb is that healing time is reduced by one-half to two-thirds the time it would normally take, all other factors remaining equal.

Rapid Wound Healing

Laser light has been shown to stimulate the collagen (protein) required to replace old tissue and repair injury. Wounds are healed, or closed over, very rapidly by the application of laser light. There is also less scar tissue formed when the laser light is applied to the area, since the rate of healing is improved.

Nerve Cell Response

Laser therapy helps to block pain transmission by decreasing nerve ending sensitivity. Laser light stimulation also produces high levels of pain-killing chemicals such as endorphins from the brain, adrenal gland and other areas. The latter mechanism is less understood and remains an area for further exploration.

Reduced Swelling

By stimulating the lymphatic system, swelling is reduced, helping what we call “dirty proteins” to be carried away from the injury site. This stimulation to the lymphatic system reduces swelling, reduces pain, and speeds healing. Other therapies that would help reduce pain would be ice compresses, or elevation of the damaged area.

Increased Blood Flow

In conjunction with improved lymphatic flow, increased blood flow will help to speed the healing process, virtually assisting in bringing good blood in and taking bad blood out of the area. Wounds heal more quickly, and help to reduce scar tissue.

Non-Invasive Pain Relief

We understand that many people desire non-invasive, non-surgical methods to treat their injuries. Non-surgical spinal decompression is a drug free, non-invasive technique used to treat the pain and symptoms of a variety of spinal compression-related medical conditions such as herniated and degenerative spinal disc disease, one of the major causes of back pain. It is promising medical treatment for long-term back pain relief, helping patients avoid surgery.

At Fort Worth Family Chiropractic, we deliver decompression therapy with a computer controlled decompression table to slowly and gently realign and separate compressed spinal discs (the soft cartilage between the vertebrae), helping to decrease pressure on pinched nerve roots. This effect accumulated over a number of treatment visits can help to retract herniated or bulging discs. Our expert therapists work with each patient to develop a properly structured treatment plan that will alleviate the pain and complications of these conditions and help prevent future occurrences.

Effective Treatment for Chronic Conditions

Non-surgical spinal decompression can also be used as a treatment for sciatica; a condition that may occur as a result of discs impinging upon spinal never roots resulting in pain radiating down a patient’s leg, and in some cases leading to numbness and/or weakness.

Treatment with non-surgical spinal decompression can treat the source of the problem by realigning discs and relieving the pressure placed on the root of the affected nerve. Patients suffering from other degenerative spine diseases such as facet arthrosis or spinal stenosis may also find that spinal decompression relieves their pain.

Non-surgical spinal decompression is integrated into an intense physical therapy program; that incorporates a strengthening and conditioning program to return patients back to an active lifestyle that they can maintain and enjoy.

Nutrition through Functional Medicine

Fort Worth Family Chiropractic is committed to providing our patients with the most researched and credible nutrition information available. Our nutrition evaluation is achieved through the use of thorough blood work analysis and saliva samples. These tests help us to pinpoint the precise physiologic root of nutritional deficiencies. Through the use of these tests we are able to evaluate hormone problems, gastrointestinal issues as well as a myriad of other conditions. Only after careful evaluation do we recommend treatment options that allow our patients to make educated decisions in regards to their personal health.

We recently implemented a weight loss program in the office, the first of its kind, with tremendous results. Please refer back to website as testimonials will be added shortly.
